The Winslow Cottage has long been a quiet piece of Outer Banks history. Built in the 1930s as a guest house for what is now the First Colony Inn, it carries the architectural language and charm of its era—simple lines, handcrafted details, and a welcoming coastal sensibility.
Today, after a remarkable transformation, the cottage sits in South Nags Head as a refined blend of preservation and forward-thinking design.
An Ambitious Expansion Rooted in Respect
When the current owners needed additional space, preserving the original structure was a priority. Rather than replace it, the entire cottage—brick chimney included—was carefully lifted 27 feet, allowing two new stories to be constructed beneath.
This inventive approach kept the historic character intact while creating space for:
- Two additional bedrooms
- Two full bathrooms
- A dedicated laundry area
- A second, spacious entertaining area with kitchenette
The result is a home that feels both expanded and cohesive, with the original cottage still defining the spirit of the property.
Preserving Character, Enhancing Comfort
Every finish and architectural decision was a collaboration guided by a commitment to authenticity. The interior reflects the texture and warmth of a bygone era, complemented by modern functionality.
Key features include:
- Period-appropriate tongue-and-groove walls and ceilings
- Vertical grain pine flooring selected for its timeless character
- Original cast iron tubs restored and paired with updated fixtures
- Two newly constructed tile showers
- Authentic antique hardware and vintage vanities
- Inset cabinetry with soapstone countertops that ground the kitchen in classic craftsmanship
- A hinged entertainment window that creates an effortless indoor-outdoor connection
- More than 1,500 sq ft of new decking across the mid-level and top floor
The revitalization also included modernized mechanical systems, engineered steel support, and upgraded insulation—subtle but essential enhancements ensuring the home performs as beautifully as it looks.
A Renewed Coastal Classic
The Winslow Cottage now stands as an example of what thoughtful preservation can achieve. It honors its 1930s origins while embracing the needs and comfort of contemporary living. The craftsmanship, both old and new, is evident in every space.
